19º EUROMEETING 2013 in TOSSA DE MAR (COSTA BRAVA)

Hotel GOLDEN BAHIA de TOSSA & SPA 4****S from 19th to the 26th April 2013

During the week we will have work sessions in which the Group of Study and Work (GET) will redact the conclusions about “the crisis and the elderly people”. The Plenary General Assembly will raise the subject chosen by the Platform AGE for the Parliament and the European Commission.

We will have also a Euromeeting of relaxation and distraction since the hotel offers us for free the heated pool, the entertainment room and the animation. The excursions that make this event a jovial, touristic and cultural meeting become now our focus of attention. Our option is based in the election of emblematic cities well-known by their monuments, history and old quarters, such as: Pals,Begur, Bañolas and Besalú. We will go to Gerona, a city influenced by the vestiges of many civilizations that left there their mark in the course of the years.

We will visit Figueres and the Dalí Museum,  known as the surrealist painter homeland, Salvador Dalí. And, as we will have full-day excursions toBarcelona and Monserrat (Natural Park and religious place) and for the first time in 19 years of existence of the Group, we will do an incursion in the neighboring country, France.

We will visit the South: the Côté Vermeille, Collioure, its harbor and its fortified church where is located the tomb of Antonio Machado, the important Spanish poet, Banyuls, Maillol’s homeland, famous French sculptor andPerpignan, the capital of the area of Languedoc, city located halfway between France and maybe a part of Catalonia where the vestiges of the County of Roussillon hobnob with the vestiges of the Kingdom of Majorca.

These destinations have been “chosen” very carefully in order to let ourselves go by the special charm of these Mediterranean places.

Please register soon… We are waiting for you in April in Tossa de Mar.

Located in one of the emblematic enclaves of the Catalan Costa Brava, the Golden Bahía de Tossa & Spa Hotel offers the best accommodation and services to ensure that you make the most of the spectacular beaches and the extensive cultural, gastronomic and sporting facilities the region has to offer.

PALS and BEGUR (half-day excursion)

We are going to Pals where visitors will walk around the alleys of one of the best preserved medieval historic centers, which is located in Baix Empordà. In Pals, there is a medieval historic centre where stands out a medieval Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries: the Torre de les Hores. The Josep Pla viewpoint (from which can be seen the fields of Empordà and the Medes Islands), the Plaça Major (the city square), the tombs in the Carrer Major and the church of Sant Pere are other features of the town we will discover. Afterwards, we will go past Begur, a municipality located few kilometers from Pals. This place is well-known because of its historic centre and its beaches. Located in the comarca of the Baix Empordà, the town of Begur and its beaches are one of the most wonderful places in the Costa Brava. The castle of Begur is composed by several monuments inherited from the most significant moments of its history; the small Roman town in the centre of Esclanyà or the eight coves and small beaches that belong to Begur, constitute a whole and a landscape environment that are incomparable.

BARCELONA and MONSERRAT (full-day excursion, lunch in restaurant)

In this day trip we will discover Monserrat; a unique massif in the world with more than 1000 years of history. In this natural park and religious place, we will visit the Basilica and the mountain that has an elevation of 1,236 m. After this visit, we will make our way to Barcelona in order to have lunch in the area of the Olympic Harbour. On the afternoon, we will enjoy a bus panoramic tour of the city and we will see the Gothic Quarter, the series of streets called Ramblas, the square called Plaça d’ Espanya, Montjuic, the Olympic Harbour, Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family, the avenue called Passeig de Gràcia and the square known as Plaça de Catalunya. Barcelona is a lovely city and a pleasure for visitors because there is always something to discover.

BESALÚ and BAÑOLAS (half-day excursion)

We will depart from the hotel towards the medieval town of Besalú, a magnificent place with an important Jewish past, where some signs of coexistence between Christian and Jewish culture still remain. The town has a big medieval center with some points of interest (the Romanesque bridge, the Curia regis and the square known as Plaça de la Libertat, etc). Besalú was designated as a historical national property ('conjunt històric-artístic') in 1966. Afterwards, we will continue our trip to Bañolas, where we will enjoy a walking tour around the lake and the historic center. The most important place of the town is the lake, which is the largest in the Iberian Peninsula. The most typical place that should be visited by all tourists is La Plaça Major (the city square) located in the middle of the town and rectangular in shape. In 1951, the town of Bañolas and its surroundings were declared “Picturesque Landscape”.

SOUTH OF FRANCE: COLLIOURE and PERPIGNAN (full-day excursion, lunch in restaurant)

Another excursion whose charm will involve all of us is the complete day we will spend in our neighboring country: France. We will go past Bañuls, homeland of the famous French sculptor called Maillol, towards Collioure, an old fishermen town, well known by its anchovies. We will do a panoramic tour around the historic center streets where we can find some interesting monuments such as the church of Notre Dame des Anges, the royal castle and the tomb of Antonio Machado, a famous 20th century Spanish poet. Subsequently, we will enjoy a guided tour of a winery, where we will have lunch and take part in a wine-tasting. On the afternoon we will get around Perpignan, the capital of the area of Languedoc, where we will do a panoramic visit of the historic center. La Cathédrale de Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Perpignan or Le Castillet, also known as “small castle”, are some of the numerous charms of this lovely city located in the South of France.

GIRONA (half-day excursion)

Girona has its origins in the Lower Paleolithic; but this city has been successively occupied by some peoples and cultures such as the Iberian, the Romans and the Moors, without forgetting the important Jewish community that lived there between the 9th and 15th centuries. More than thousand years of history coexist in the old Girona, which surrounds the Cathedral, composed of a unique nave, built between the 14th and 17th centuries. Next to this temple, the Jewish quarter or Call is composed by a labyrinth of streets.

The romantic monastery of Sant Pere de Galligants, the collegiate church of Sant Feliu, where are preserved Saint Narcissus' relics, the patron saint of the city, the archaeological promenade, the city wall and the boulevard called Rambla are places that must be visited by the lovers of the silence born by the majesty of the history. The admission to the Cathedral is included.

FIGUERES and THE DALÍ MUSEUM (half-day excursion)

Figueres, city known as Salvador Dali’s homeland, offers numerous possibilities such as the Theatre-Museum Dalí, dedicated to the brilliant surrealist painter. Besides this, the city has an important monumental patrimony; not only the old medieval city walls and Sant Ferran Castle must be highlighted, but also several examples of modernist and neoclassical architecture that can be seen in the city centre. From the Medieval Age, some beautiful spots are preserved such as the Town Hall square, refurbished in a Neoclassical style, where the council stands out, or the surroundings of the street Carrer Magre, where is located the old Jewish quarter. The Rambla is the main boulevard and true axis of the city. In this lively commercial thoroughfare are concentrated the most ambitious architectural projects that were promoted by the local booming bourgeoisie of 19th and 20th centuries. It is worth highlighting the big profusion of modernist buildings such as the Casa Cusí, Casa Puig-Soler or Casa Salleras; and the neoclassical style buildings such as Casa Bonaterra, Casa del Café Progrés and Casa Polideseia. The admission to the Dalí Museum is included.
